About Fong

Dr Katie YANG LEUNG Yin-Fong, best known by her stage name of Fong Yim Fun (Fong), was a renowned Cantonese opera star and actress in Hong Kong for over two decades, from 1937 to 1959. Her virtuosity and distinctive acting and singing style earned her much popularity, and her fans love her to the present day. She retired in 1959 to marry and have a family. Fong became a dedicated mother and a philanthropist who supported those in need. She still lives in Hong Kong.

After retirement, Fong remained active in the Cantonese opera community. In 1984, after her children had grown up, she formed the Kwan Fong Charitable Foundation with her good friend, Dr Maria Lee Tseng Chiu Kwan, an entrepreneur, artist, and opera fan. Fong became, and still is, a dedicated philanthropist. She performed concerts for charity and held art exhibitions, DVDs, and book sales to raise funds for the elderly or handicapped and for scholarships and education in Hong Kong and overseas, promoting Chinese Culture and Cantonese Opera.
