Fong Yim Fun's brilliant career spanned over several decades, participating in over 150 films until her retirement in the 1970s. Her legacy as a Cantonese opera singer and actress continues to be celebrated in Hong Kong and beyond. She helped to bring the art form to a wider audience and introduced new fans to the beauty and complexity of Cantonese opera. Fong is remembered as one of the greats of the genre, celebrated as the "Queen of Cantonese Opera".
Early Career
Fong started her training in Cantonese opera at age ten in Enping, Guangdong, when her adoptive mother recognized her interest in and talent for opera singing. Her mother took her to the Kwok Sing Theatre to study under teacher Pal Kit-cho.
From 1937 on, as opera troupes developed, Fong and many Cantonese opera artists came from the mainland to Hong Kong for better stability. However, in 1941, many artists left for Guangdong and other countries during the Japanese army occupation in Hong Kong, and Fong joined the Shing Sou Ling Opera Troupe in Guangzhou; it was here that Director Yik Kim Chuen bestowed her with her stage name "Fong Yim Fun". When Fong was sixteen, she returned to Hong Kong and joined the Great East Asia Troupe. It was here that Fong had her debut female lead status in opera. With her beautiful voice, her debut was a great success.
In 1943, she joined the Chow Fung Nin Troupe under Law Kar-Kuen, and she was the rising star and was cast as the female principal. Later, she joined the Tai Lung Fung Opera Troupe as a female principal with great artists such as Sun Ma Sze Tsang. She sang her songs in her beautiful "Fong" graceful and melancholy singing style and soon became adored by her Hong Kong and Guandong fans. She became a star with followers, fans and students.
In 1949, she settled permanently in Hong Kong and brought together the Yim Hoi Tong Opera Troupe with Chan Yin Tong. Due to her popularity, she was honoured with the title "Queen of Principle Female Roles in Cantonese Opera" in 1952 and 1953.
